Week 1 was a huge success, but we are determined to make Week 2 even better! We are excited to see our Gators continue building relationships, strengthening routines, and growing together as a school family. This week, classroom instruction will be in full swing as our teachers and students dive deeper into learning and set the foundation for a successful year. Power of Us!

Safety MUST - Important to Read
Students must exit vehicles from the passenger side during morning car drop-off. We are also implementing a designated walker drop-off zone located on the side of the gym. We also hope more families remain in the morning car drop-off line rather than parking and walking students across the parking lot.
Cafeteria Reminders
Parents are able to eat lunch with their child beginning this week. Our parent table is located in the hallway, and please remember that only your child may eat with you during lunch. Parents should also keep devices put away and use this time to enjoy lunch and conversation with their child. Younger siblings should not be on a device either in our school.
We also want to remind families that students are not able to have food from their lunch boxes heated up during lunch. During the first week of school, we had many kindergarten and 1st grade students asking our lunch monitors to heat up their food. Please make sure your child’s lunch is ready to eat when they arrive at school, as our lunch monitors are not able to heat or prepare food for students.
Spirit Rock Reservations
We still have many spots available for families to reserve and showcase their creativity.
Monday, August 31: Student Advisory Committee Application Released
Our Student Advisory Committee gives 1st–5th grade Gators the opportunity to develop leadership skills, represent their classmates, share ideas, and help shape the Greenwood experience. CLICK HERE for all the details. Please note their is a parent component that needs to be completed.
Tuesday, September 1: PTA Spirit Night: Dave and Busters
Come out and support our Greenwood PTA for a fun night at Dave & Buster’s!
Thursday, September 3: Student Advisory Committee Application Due
Applications must be submitted to the main office by 8:00 AM. We will not accept late applications.
September 4 - September 7: No School - Labor Day Holiday
Enjoy the long weekend, Gator families! We will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, September 8.
Tuesday, September 8: Q1 Morning Clubs Begin
We kick off our morning clubs at 7:20 AM! As a reminder, students cannot enter a club after 7:25 AM. We highly recommend dropping off club participants between 7:10–7:20 AM, if possible, to ensure they have enough time to eat breakfast, if needed, and get to their club on time.
Wednesday, September 9: Student Advisory Committee Selection (1st - 5th)
Mrs. Earl and Mr. Stein will announce at the end of the day which students will represent their classrooms on the Student Advisory Committee.
Friday, September 11: Spilling the Tea with Mr. Stein @ 9 AM

Friday, September 11: Grandparents Luncheon
One of our favorite events of the entire year is right around the corner—our Grandparents Luncheon! If your child’s grandparent is planning to attend, please email your child’s teacher by Wednesday, September 9. Grandparents should bring a lunch for themselves and their child, as they will not be able to purchase lunch in the cafeteria. For the past eight years, we have enjoyed our luncheon outside in the Gator Gardens, and we are hopeful that we will have beautiful weather again this year! Please see the lunch times below.

Morning Announcements from Mrs. Bishop
We’re bringing a little retro energy to our daily routine! This year, our Morning Announcements feature fun 90s-themed segments—from classic pop-culture throwbacks to retro trivia—designed to start our day with a smile. More than just entertainment, these daily broadcasts play a vital role in strengthening our school climate and culture. By blending nostalgic fun (Reading Rainbow, Friends, Cribs) with daily reminders, we anchor our mornings in core Gator Values, setting a positive tone and building a connected, excited community before the first lesson even begins.
RMHC Pop Top Collection
This year, Greenwood will continue gathering Pop Tops to assist families at the Ronald McDonald House in RVA! Pop top collections add up to make an impact in providing temporary housing and support services for families of pediatric patients. Please collect them and drop them off in your child’s house bucket located in front of the cafeteria. If your student is in kindergarten and is not assigned a house just yet, hold on to them and once they get a house then you can put them into the assigned buckets. Each house will earn 10 house points for every bucket filled.
Johnson - Head of House and Spirit Captains
Head of House and Spirit Captain students will meet for their first leadership meeting of the year on Friday, September 11th in the library between 7:20-7:55am.
Friday Communication
Thank you for taking the time to read your child’s Friday Communication from their teacher. Our teachers put a great deal of time and effort into preparing these weekly updates to make sure families have the information they need to support their child’s learning and success. Please take a few minutes each week to review this important communication.
Student ID Updates
Students must have their ID with them each day. If your child has lost their ID, please let their teacher know as soon as possible so we can provide a replacement. Please note that there is a fee for replacement IDs. Student IDs are an important part of our daily routines and are used for breakfast and lunch procedures, transportation, and other school processes. When students do not have their ID, these routines can become more difficult and time-consuming for everyone.
Welcome Back Mr. Ross: Wise Guyz Lunch Program
We are excited to share that The Wise Guyz Lunch Program is an innovative prevention and mentoring initiative developed through a partnership between Henrico Prevention Services, Henrico County Public Schools, and the Henrico Office of Family Engagement. Designed to support male elementary students, the program provides a structured six-week curriculum during lunch at Greenwood, removing barriers to participation while maximizing student engagement. Mr. Ross has been working with our boys for the past three years and has made a tremendous impact through his mentorship, guidance, and relationships with students. Through meaningful conversations, engaging activities, and consistent mentorship, our students are building stronger relationships, developing positive decision-making skills, and learning strategies that will help them navigate challenges both in and out of school. We are especially proud to share that this summer, The Wise Guyz Lunch Program received the 2026 NACo Achievement Award, recognizing the program’s meaningful impact and innovative approach to supporting our students. We are excited to welcome Mr. Ross back to Greenwood this year to continue this important work and mentorship with our students. The data and results speak loud and clear—this work matters, relationships matter, and investing in our students matters. We are grateful for the partnership and the positive impact The Wise Guyz program continues to have on our Greenwood Gators.
Final Thought
Week 1 was about finding our rhythm. Week 2 is about building momentum. Every morning, every classroom, every conversation, and every relationship is another opportunity to make Greenwood better. Power of Us!
