Greenwood Families,
We hope everyone is safe, warm, and enjoying time together. Please remember that all decisions regarding school closures or delays are made at the central office level, so be sure you are following Henrico County Public Schools on ParentSquare and social media for the most accurate information. As shared last week, HCPS students are not expected to complete schoolwork while out of school, and the packets or choice boards sent home last Friday are not to be completed. I know snow days can be a special opportunity to slow down, connect as a family, make memories, learn a new game, read together, or simply enjoy being present with one another.
LAMPS Schedule
We will continue to follow our regular LAMPS schedule and will not rotate days due to missed school days. If we have a two-hour delay, each grade level will still participate in LAMPS as scheduled. Maintaining consistency helps students keep their routines and ensures continued access to these important learning experiences.
Morning Clubs - Quarter 3 - Sign Up Here
We still have openings in many of our Quarter 3 morning clubs, and we would love for more students to participate. These clubs provide students with a positive start to the day, build friendships, and help them feel connected before the academic day begins. Starting the morning engaged and excited sets the tone for learning and success.

Tardy Update
We are asking for your support, as January has had the highest number of tardies in over 10 years. Our late bell rings at 7:40 AM, and students arriving after that time must be walked into the building, as the drop-off loops close promptly at 7:40 AM. There is a strong connection between consistent attendance and academic and behavioral success, and being on time helps students start the day calm, confident, and ready to learn.
Author Visit at Greenwood - Order Here
We are thrilled to welcome bestselling author and illustrator Judd Winick, creator of the HILO series, to Greenwood on Thursday, February 5. He will speak with students in grades 3–5 about being a professional cartoonist, share his creative process, and introduce his new book, HILO Presents: The Mighty!. Experiences like this inspire a love of reading, creativity, and storytelling, while helping students see themselves as authors and artists.
READ to RUN – 5th Grade
With some possible time out of school, we encourage our 5th graders to continue independent reading as they work toward the goal of reading 100 books. This challenge promotes stamina, responsibility, and a lifelong love of reading, all while working toward the exciting incentive of earning a brand-new pair of shoes.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
We are closely monitoring the weather, and if school is closed for multiple days, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be rescheduled for Thursday, February 12. Families will automatically keep their selected time slots, and teachers will not resend sign-ups. These conferences are essential for strengthening our home-school partnership and ensuring we are aligned in supporting each child’s growth.
The Daily Report
Beginning in Quarter 3, each student will bring home a Daily Report in their green take-home folder. If a student receives an “X” for a discipline infraction, it will be noted on the report, with additional details shared through the RCA app. Strong family-school communication allows us to work together proactively to support positive choices and student success.
Character Trait Award Ceremony – Accountability
We look forward to celebrating our Greenwood Gators who demonstrate accountability on Friday, January 30 at 7:20 AM. Recognizing character traits reinforces the values we teach daily and helps students understand the importance of responsibility both in and out of the classroom. If school is closed or delayed, the ceremony will be rescheduled.
Quarter 2 Report Cards
Quarter 2 report cards will be distributed on Friday, January 30. Reviewing report cards together helps students reflect on their progress, celebrate growth, and set goals for the next quarter. These conversations build ownership and encourage students to take pride in their learning journey.
Jump Rope for Heart
On Monday, February 2, students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart throughout the school day. This event teaches students about heart health, physical activity, and making healthy choices. Building these habits early supports lifelong wellness and reinforces the importance of caring for both our bodies and minds.
Black History Month Celebration – 3rd Grade Performance
We invite all 3rd grade families to join us on Friday, February 6 at 8:00 AM for our Black History Month celebration. Moving this event to the morning allows 100% of our students to participate and ensures every child has the opportunity to perform and be celebrated. This experience honors history, culture, and student voice.
Spilling the Tea with Mr. Stein
Join us on Friday, February 6 for another episode of Spilling the Tea with Mr. Stein. Topics include safety updates, attendance, mentorship opportunities, counseling groups, behavior data, musical performances, the school play, the 5th grade celebration, PTA updates, and ways to get involved. We will also discuss what’s brewing at Greenwood, what’s coming next, and how families can help shape the future of our school.

Lunch Volunteer
With time out of school, students will be excited to return to routines, including lunchtime in the cafeteria. Extra adult support during lunch helps maintain a calm, safe, and positive environment, allowing students to enjoy their time and return to class ready to learn.
School Song: Dreams
We encourage families to have students listen to our school song, Dreams, during the snow break. Our school song builds pride, unity, and a shared sense of identity that connects students across grade levels.
Indoor Recess
While we always aim to take students outside, weather conditions may require indoor recess when school resumes. Indoor recess can be a meaningful time for students to read, complete unfinished work, play quiet games, or practice mindfulness and self-regulation skills.
Music in the Morning
We are looking for musicians to play in the mornings, and we appreciate your help spreading the word. Live music during arrival creates a welcoming atmosphere, reduces anxiety, and helps students start the day feeling joyful and inspired.
Arrival support
With new morning clubs beginning, we are seeking additional support during morning arrival. Nearly 275 cars unload between 7:10 and 7:40 AM, and extra help ensures a smooth, safe, and efficient start to the day for everyone.
Join the PTA
We are applying to become a National PTA School of Excellence and need 75 more members to reach our goal. Joining the PTA strengthens our community and directly supports programs and opportunities for our students.
Greenwood in Action: Community Connections
Greenwood continues to grow through partnerships with families, local businesses, and community organizations. These connections provide students with authentic experiences, resources, and role models that extend learning beyond school walls. When our community comes together, students see what it means to belong to something bigger than themselves.
Order Yearbook Today
We encourage families to order yearbooks now, as we often do not have extras available at the end of the year. Ordering early ensures your child has a keepsake filled with memories from this school year.
Kula Spirit Store
With our final Unity Day approaching in March, we invite families to share our Amazon wishlist. Your support ensures we have enough items for students to use their RCA coins, reinforcing positive behavior and schoolwide expectations.

Debra Smith Scholarship - $1000
The Greenwood Elementary School PTA is proud to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a Greenwood alumnus who has used their time, talent, and leadership to positively impact their school or broader community.
Student Spotlight: Shining Our Light
Each week, we will highlight our Gators on the morning announcements! Celebrating students helps reinforce positive behavior and reminds every child that their actions matter. When students see peers recognized, it inspires them to shine their own light.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Together, we are building a strong, connected, and joyful Greenwood community. Let's go Gators!
Mr. Stein
