Greenwood Families,

We can’t wait to shower our teachers with love this week during Teacher Appreciation Week. Their dedication, passion, and commitment to our students make Greenwood such a special place to learn and grow.

We are also excited for our students in grades 2–5 as they showcase their progress and knowledge on the Math SOL and cumulative assessments.

Thank you for continuing to read our updates carefully as we close out the school year. We have many important and exciting events ahead, and we want to ensure our communication keeps you fully informed. We also encourage you to follow us online at @Greenwood_elem to stay connected and celebrate all the great things happening at Greenwood.

Special Thanks from Mr. Stein
A huge thank you to our Greenwood family for making Principal Appreciation Day on Friday, May 1 so special for me! I truly love our community and am grateful for every moment I get to spend with your children. Thank you for your kindness, support, and for allowing me to serve in this role.

PTA Rock
We are excited to launch a new initiative where families can paint the large rock near our entrance. This will be a fun way for our community to share special messages such as happy birthday, good luck, congratulations, welcome messages, and words of encouragement. More details, including guidelines and sign-ups, will be coming soon from the PTA.

House Achievement
Thank you, families, for continuing to support your child in meeting their behavior and academic goals so they can participate in our weekly House Achievement Celebration during lunch. This week, by student request, we are bringing back karaoke! If your child did not meet House Achievement this week, thank you for partnering with us through the Home-School Partnership form to reflect, reset, and set goals for the week ahead. Accountability is one of our core values and plays an important role in supporting both student growth and a positive school environment.

Summer Packet Request
As a reminder, Greenwood was not allotted any spots for students to attend summer school. I also want to clarify that our teachers are not responsible for creating or providing individualized summer packets for students. While teachers are always happy to suggest ways to continue learning over the summer, we encourage families to utilize available community resources, reading programs, and online tools to help keep skills sharp and students engaged.

Bus Infractions
Last week, we experienced several bus infractions. Please remember that the same school expectations apply while riding the bus. Riding the bus is a privilege, and it may be revoked if students are unable to follow rules and maintain a safe environment. We also ask families to reinforce the importance of respecting and listening to our bus drivers—they play a critical role in getting our students to and from school safely each day. A simple “thank you” goes a long way in showing appreciation for their hard work.

5th Grade Party – CLICK HERE
We’re excited to celebrate our 5th graders with a special end-of-year party! $10 tickets can be purchased through the PTA website using the link above.

T-Shirt Contest
We’re excited to launch our T-Shirt Contest as we work to complete our final hallway quilt! We are looking for up to 14 unique designs that celebrate Greenwood—our teams, houses, spirit, clubs, and everything that makes our school special. Submissions are due by Friday, May 15, and selected shirts will become part of a legacy quilt that will be displayed in our hallway for years to come—representing Greenwood’s story over time.

Monday, May 4 – Let the 4th Be With You
Students and staff can dress up in Star Wars-themed clothes. Have fun and may the force be with you!

Monday, May 4 – Head of House Appreciation Breakfast @ 7:45 AM
We look forward to welcoming families of our Head of House students to the library as we celebrate their leadership and commitment to our school community. This will also be an opportunity for us to gather feedback and hear directly from families about how we can continue to grow and strengthen the House experience. Your voice helps guide our next steps and ensures we are building something meaningful together.

Tuesday, May 5 – School Nurse Day
Students may bring in a bandage as a small token of appreciation for all the ways our nurse helps keep our school healthy and cared for. We are so grateful for the compassion, care, and expertise our nurse brings to Greenwood each and every day.

Tuesday, May 5 – PBIS Level Up Breakfast
We are excited to host a collaborative session focused on strengthening our PBIS practices and continuing to align them with our House System to better support all students. Parent input is critical as we reflect on what is working well and where we can grow. We value this partnership and want families to be an active part of shaping our action steps moving forward.

Tuesday, May 5 – 5th Grade Signing Day Luncheon
We are proud to celebrate our 5th grade students who have been accepted into advanced academic programs as they take this exciting next step in their educational journey. Our hope is that our younger Gators are inspired as they see how we celebrate academic achievement and goal setting at Greenwood.

Wednesday, May 6 – 2nd–5th Grade SOL and Cumulative Assessment Part 1
Thursday, May 7 – 2nd–5th Grade SOL and Cumulative Assessment Part 2
This is another opportunity for our students to showcase their growth, confidence, and problem-solving skills in math. We encourage all students to take their time, show their thinking, get a good night’s sleep, and start the day with a healthy breakfast.

Wednesday, May 6 – RCA Spirit Store Opens for House Cup Championship
Families can log in to see how students can use their house coins for exciting end-of-year experiences.

Thursday, May 7 – HEF Appreciation Day
We invite all students to wear green as we celebrate the Henrico Education Foundation and their continued support of our school.

Friday, May 8 – Mother’s Day Sneaker Ball @ 7:20 AM
We warmly invite moms and the incredible women in our students’ lives—grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and mentors—to join us for a special morning dance celebration in the gym. Please allow time for parking in the back of the school, as this will be a packed event.

Friday, May 8 – Student Leadership Applications Due @ 8 AM
We are excited to see our future leaders step forward as they apply for roles including Head of House, Spirit Captain, and President of Advisory.

Monday, May 11 – Field Day
Lots of house points are on the line! Thank you to Mrs. Jacobs and our volunteers for making this event possible. As a reminder, we will not be opening our doors the day of the event, and attendance required preregistration. We appreciate your support in helping us keep the day safe, organized, and focused on fun for all students.

Monday, May 11 – ESL Teacher Appreciation Day
We love our ESL teachers! Their work is essential in supporting our growing and diverse student population, helping ensure every child feels seen, supported, and successful.

Tuesday, May 12 – School of Pop After-School Practice (until 3:30 PM)
This is our final after-school practice at Greenwood. All actors, chorus members, and stage crew will need a note to stay after school. This final rehearsal is critical as we bring all elements of the performance together and prepare for a strong and confident showcase.

Tuesday, May 12 – Safeties Luncheon
We look forward to having lunch with our school safeties and celebrating all their hard work. Our safeties play a vital leadership role each day, helping ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students while modeling responsibility and pride in our school.

Wednesday, May 13 – 5th Grade SOL Science
Our 5th graders have got this! Our Gators are ready to rock this cumulative science assessment. We are confident in their preparation and encourage them to stay focused, take their time, and show all they know.

Wednesday, May 13 – Spilling the Tea @ 6 PM
With the final weeks of school approaching, Mr. Stein will host a virtual session to answer questions submitted ahead of time or shared live. This is a great opportunity to stay informed, gain clarity, and strengthen our connection as a school community. Your questions and input help guide meaningful conversations and next steps.

Thursday, May 14 – PTA Meeting: Greenwood Voyage @ 6 PM
We can’t wait to meet all our incoming KinderGators! This is a great opportunity for our newest students and families to learn about Greenwood and get excited about joining our school community. Students will rotate through a series of engaging stations, including a school bus experience. This event helps build comfort, excitement, and a strong start for our future Gators.

Thursday, May 14 – Fire Safety during LAMPS
This annual event teaches our students about fire safety and emergency preparedness. These lessons are critical in helping students understand how to respond in real-life situations and make safe, informed decisions.

Friday, May 15 – Reading Award Ceremony
This is our fourth and final reading award ceremony, beginning at 7:20 AM. Celebrating reading success is an important part of our culture at Greenwood. These ceremonies recognize student growth, build confidence, and continue to inspire a lifelong love of reading.

Friday, May 15 – PTA Spirit Night: Ashland Skateland
Let’s pack the skating rink and enjoy a fun night together as a Greenwood community!

Friday, May 15 – Arts in Motion Showcase at Hermitage High @ 6 PM
We are excited to showcase performances from our step team, dance teams, drumline, and hip-hop groups. All participants should arrive at Hermitage High School by 5:45 PM. Our students will be performing alongside 10 other schools, and we are proud to represent Greenwood with energy, talent, and school spirit.
