This Friday, report cards will be coming home, and we wanted to let you know about two important changes. As part of our commitment to aligning instruction with the newly adopted 2024 Virginia English Standards of Learning, we have updated the English Language Arts (ELA) portion of the elementary report card. These changes reflect evidence-based practices to strengthen literacy development and provide clearer insight into your child’s literacy progress.
Beginning this school year, you will see two new course names on the report card:
Literacy Foundational Skills – This section provides information on your child’s development of essential skills, including phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding/spelling, vocabulary, oral language, reading fluency, and handwriting. These foundational skills are critical for building strong reading fluency and overall literacy.
Reading, Writing, and Research – This section reflects your child’s progress in comprehension, composition, writing mechanics, and research skills, fostering deeper understanding and effective communication.
These updates align our instructional practices with the latest research to ensure every child receives the tools they need to become a confident, skilled reader and writer. We look forward to continuing our partnership with you to support your child’s literacy journey.
